Is Earned Media Becoming “Hacked” Media?

first_imgDigital and social media kicked up quite a bit of dust when they first joyrode through marketers’ once-tidy offices. Many previously held truths didn’t survive the frenzy — and the few that did now walk with a limp.To make sense of marketing’s new reality, thoughtful observers returned to first principles and re-examined the nature of media itself.Change-agents like David Armano and Sean Corcoran revisited the fundamental question, “What is media?” and concluded that the interactive era was comprised of three classes of media — owned, paid, and earned — and advised marketers to match engagement strategies to each type.Significant Changes to Earned MediaThe thinking goes a little something like this: Owned media consists of your company’s website, landing pages and social media outposts. It tends to serve as the marketing team’s “center of gravity,” or the point where conversions first occur.Paid media (everything from search and display ads to promoted content on social networks) requires monetary exchange for message distribution. These placements can be an effective way to procure new leads or re-connect with contacts that have disengaged. Finally, earned media typically refers to the output of public relations — articles placed in publications, commercial blogs, or analyst reports. Credible earned media doesn’t require payment.Although all media classes are evolving, some changes are more accelerated than others.Owned media, for example, has progressed incrementally over the past few years. Certainly, there have been enhancements to all of the channels on which brands maintain a presence, but the fundamentals of owned media have been relatively stable.Similarly, while digital and social media giants regularly introduce new paid media products, the overall trajectory of paid media remains linear. Marketers want to reach prospects and customers, so media companies create products that help them achieve those objectives.Earned media is different. Perhaps because of its reliance on highly disrupted industries like print and broadcast news, earned media is arguably the most fluid of the three classes.Whereas a generation ago, there was one PR professional for every journalist, today that ratio is about four-to-one. There simply aren’t enough writers — or publications — to report regularly on every business’ news, limiting “earned” opportunities to a finite number of must-cover companies. (Perhaps this is why both public relations executives and reporters both rank among the top 10 most stressful professions.)The Birth of Hacked MediaNecessity, however, is the mother of invention. Earned media constraints are giving rise to a new class of media: hacked media, or generating coverage by “rewiring” the way stories are published. Similar to earned media, hacked media requires no monetary transfer. It’s not about buying attention, but rather hustling it.There’s no single way to “hack” media. It is, by definition, a bespoke process. But there are techniques that have proven effective. For example, attaching your brand to a real-time news event, sometimes called newsjacking, is a reliable way to elbow your way into media coverage. Author David Meerman Scott’s book on the topic describes how companies of all sizes have injected their names into breaking news to enjoy media attention that their products were never able to generate.Content-led communications is another hack. I previously ran marketing for a startup. When we moved our office from Cambridge to Boston, management expected the local media to cover the “news.” Instead of pitching the sure-to-fail “company moves three miles” story, we instead created a map of all the hot startups in Boston and equipped all of the featured companies to embed the image on their blogs. They did. And the frenzy of social sharing attracted The Boston Globe, which featured their version of the map in that Sunday’s Business section.Another reliable hack is incorporating the writer into the story. While this ego-driven approach is generally more effective with individual bloggers than it is with commercial news sites, premium content — like a professionally designed infographic — that visualizes the work of the publication can sometimes result in wide-reaching social shares, if not an actual article. Finally, creating a groundswell of support among influencers is another way at the media.I advise a company called Little Bird, and I use their product, essentially a search engine for influencers, to identify the people who are most trusted on a given topic. Then, when I have a product or content that relates to their sphere of influence, give them a preview of our story. The key here is to select influencers on niche topics because they are trusted by insiders, like journalists and analysts, but their profile remains “below the radar” of your competitors. In the end, what does it all mean? It means earned media faces an oversupply problem. The standard PR playbook will produce diminishing returns because it’s like increasing inventory when there aren’t enough retailers to stock your product.PR traditionalists may bristle at the notion of “hacking” the media, but the alternative — a complete Apple, Facebook, Google, and Marissa Mayer media takeover — is far more troubling. What are your views on the growth of hacked media? That means we’re two months away from the start of college football!!! Let’s turn our attention to the most experienced player on OSU’s roster entering 2017 and the face of its offensive line. How he got to OSUA three-star tackle out of Mansfield High School (Mansfield, Tex.), Crabtree chose the Cowboys over offers from Baylor, Texas Tech, Washington State and others. He was the nation’s 51st-ranked offensive tackle according to 247Sports. Joe Wickline was his chief recruiter but he would never play a snap under Wick’s tutelage. Crabtree has seen four (!) different offensive line coaches during his time in Stillwater. What he’s done in StillwaterCrabtree redshirted in 2013 but walked right into a starting job as a redshirt freshman the following year. After starting the first five games of the season, he missed four due to injury. He returned to the starting lineup on a cold, rainy night in Waco. Yeah, that night. Crabtree has started every game of Mason Rudolph’s career.Mike Yurcich talked about Crabtree’s value to the Cowboys’ offense ahead of last year’s Alamo Bowl.“Zach, a lot of experience, a lot of snaps,” said Yurcich. “He’s all ball. He’s all football man, and the guy is going to be a coach one day, and he’s a fun guy to be around. He keeps it light, but yet when game time comes, we run it his way because he’s a very consistent, tough player, and has emerged as one of our leaders on offense.”Role in 2017With Cal grad-transfer Aaron Cochran set to take up the left tackle spot, Crabtree can stay home as the starting right tackle. With Cochran and Crabtree manning the edge, the offensive line’s first string is pretty much set. Brad Lundblade at center, Marcus Keyes at left guard and my prediction is that Larry Williams reclaims his starting role at right guard to start 2017.Noteworthy stats and highlightsCrabtree was voted by the Coaches to the All-Big 12 second-team as he helped the Cowboys take a big stride forward for the OL in 2016. He enters 2017 as the leading Cowboy with 34 career starts.last_img read more

Mason Rudolph Training With Zac Robinson, Says He’s ‘Laser Focused’

first_imgOklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph has made it an offseason habit to be trained by former OSU standout Zac Robinson. Entering his senior season, the South Carolina native made good on his habit again recently according to gopokes.com.“He’s come down a couple of times and it’s nice to get the work in,” Robinson said of the senior quarterback. “He’s always dying for more and more workouts and more information. He never stops. It is pretty impressive just to see his process and what he wants to put into this season and really attack every single day. He’s got a great process about everything he does and I’m really fired up to watch him play because everything is kind of clicking for him and he’s going to have a really good year. It is going to be fun to watch him.”Rudolph enters the 2017 season with lofty expectations. With a Biletnikoff contender to throw to, an abundance of receivers, and an All-American running back to stand by his side in the backfield, it wouldn’t at all be stunning to see him kick his feet back and enjoy the attention he’s getting on a national scale. But Robinson praised Rudolph’s focus and willingness to push to acquire knowledge despite his successes on and off the field.“He’s completely laser focused in and now when I work with him I’m not really coaching. It’s more reminders,” said Robinson. “You get to a certain level and it is just a reminder here and a reminder there. Coach Yurcich and those guys do such a good job with him that what I do is kind of an extension of what they’re doing. He knows what he needs to work on and some of the weaknesses that he ultimately wants to become strengths and I think he’s done that in the off season. He is a very planned out guy and wants everything done a structured way. That is what it takes to play quarterback and be real successful and he definitely has all that stuff going.”At Big 12 media days, Rudolph said he was motivated by one thing: winning the chip.“I won a state championship my senior year in high school, and that’s something I hadn’t done after the first years where we lost,” he said. “I think I’m motivated by that. It’s kind of the sole goal that’s in the forefront of our teams mind.” While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. The next subject of our summer-long countdown saw the field in 12 games as a true freshman and could make a bigger impact in 2017.How he got to OSUCook came to the Cowboys as a walk-on from Canadian High School (Canadian, Tex.) where he played on both sides of the ball. As a running back he rushed for 2,122 yards and 32 touchdowns on 9.5 yards per carry his senior season. He was also a pesky defensive back and returned punts and kicks. Cook’s versatility and production earned him all-district honors all four years of his prep career. What he’s done in StillwaterCook is not exactly a household name among Cowboy fans but the true freshman earned playing time upon arrival in Stillwater. He played in every game except the Alamo Bowl with most of his burn coming on special teams.AdChoices广告Role in 2017He’s already put on nearly 10 pounds and has gained valuable experience on kick coverage. A rotation role at safety is not outside the realm of possibility — especially if someone twists an ankle or a knee. Look for Cook’s role to increase. He could compete for reps on defense either this fall or next.Noteworthy stats and highlightsHad two tackles against Iowa State and a tackle for loss against Southeastern Louisiana in last year’s season opener. In this past spring game, pitched in for four tackles (two solo). During his senior season in high school, Cook recorded 85 total tackles, six tackles for loss and two interceptions.last_img read more

Neymar was left in tears after tangling with Marseille’s Bouna Sarr, with all signs pointing toward a damaged ankle. While preliminary tests ruled out a fracture or serious sprain in the joint on Sunday evening, subsequent examinations revealed he has fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot. Andre Silva scored his first Serie A goal in the final seconds of the game as AC Milan earned a dramatic last-gasp 1-0 win at Genoa. The Portugal striker arrived at San Siro from Porto among much fanfare in the close-season, but he had failed to score in 16 previous top-flight matches for the Rossoneri in a difficult domestic campaign. However, Silva was the hero for Gennaro Gattuso’s men at the Luigi Ferraris when he leapt to head in Suso’s 94th-minute cross and settle what had been an attritional contest.  Article continues below Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Online Betting Odds Tab Spencer Sanders as Favorite to Win OSU QB Job

first_imgThey say what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But what about offshore gambling forums? Well, they say Spencer Sanders is the likely starting quarterback for OSU in 2019.According to odds from the online gambling site BetOnline.ag, Sanders is the 1-3 frontrunner to win the job as of Tuesday, July 30 (two days before the beginning of fall camp). Dru Brown, the only other quarterback considered to be contending for the job with Sanders, is listed at 2-1. For the uninitiated, 1-3 odds as a percentage probability is 75 percent. 2-1 odds as a percentage probability is 33.3 percent.Translated: Sanders is the clear favorite.Vegas doesn’t seem to agree at all with the spin that’s being put out of Stillwater of late. Mike Gundy said at Big 12 Media Days that no quarterback has won the job yet, and new offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson doubled down on that notion Monday at OSU’s pre-camp media outing.“This is an even race,” said Gleeson, emphasizing that the best accuracy and most intelligence should give one quarterback the winning edge. “We need a guy who can lead our players, who can be intelligent enough to run this no-huddle. There’s all different shapes and sizes of quarterbacks, but the thing we all understand is that accuracy matters. Whether you throw it hard or fast or big or small, accuracy is really important.”The odds give Sanders a huge leg up on Brown, which means there’s some value there with Brown. Because from everyone we’ve talked to both on and off the record, this seems to be a tighter race than these odds would indicate. Sanders may be a monster favorite to win the gig, which he may in fact go on to do, but it’s far from a done deal at this point. 10 Questions: Are We Underrating Oklahoma State’s Offensive Line?

first_imgWelcome to the fourth of my 10 preseason questions about Oklahoma State (at this rate, we might not even make it to five). These are, of course, unanswerable — like a lot of the writing we do — but still fun for discussion and debate.Let’s jump into today’s question. Here’s a list of previous questions.1. Can you Change a Discipline Culture in One Year2. Who is RB2?3. Wait, Chuba’s not better than Justice, right?4. Are we underrating the offensive line?Carson and I recently ran through our overrated/underrated position groups on a podcast, and as we were doing it, I realized I’d whiffed. I said the defensive line for Oklahoma State had a chance to be underrated — and while that might be true — I think I got the wrong side of the ball. It’s actually OSU’s offensive line that has an opportunity to shine as a position group we don’t expect to shine in 2019. Part of this is self-inflicted. After allowing just 24 sacks in 2017, that number rose to 34 in 2018, outside the top 100 in the country. While that’s not the only measure of success for an OL, it’s emblematic of a line that was oftentimes quite shaky in protecting QB1.Enter Vince Lombardi Charlie Dickey, Mike Gundy’s most prized assistant coach hire since … Dana Holgorsen? Dickey is raved about both in front of and behind the scenes in Stillwater, and he’s inheriting a cupboard that’s quite full thanks to Josh Henson.Although not much has changed in terms of the starters at the end of last year (only Bryce Bray is new), OSU has far more depth than it’s had in years. Here’s the two-deep.LT: Dylan Galloway (297 lbs), Hunter Anthony (330!)LG: Marcus Keyes (309), Hunter Woodard (295)C: Johnny Wilson (304), Ry Schneider (320)RG: Bryce Bray (300), Ry Schneider (320)RT: Teven Jenkins (330), Jacob Farrell (308)OSU running 295-plus across the board on their two-deep with four guys who were just entering college a year ago (Anthony, Woodard, Bray, Farrell), while not super unusual in 2019, is nonetheless encouraging. More importantly, Dickey molding them into something worthy of a Big 12 contender seems imminent.“The offensive line has come a long way,” said wide receiver Dillon Stoner recently. “Coach Dickey is an awesome guy and a great coach. I know all the guys respect him a bunch. Assignments-wise, they just seem sound. Very few mistakes on the line from what I’ve noticed. Obviously, I’m out running around, but they seem to be doing great and I love our o-line.”There is a sense of organization and toughness from that crew that there just hasn’t been in recent years. Henson was a great recruiter and a good coach, but Dickey seems like he might be great at both. And it’s not as if last year’s OL was completely lousy. They did creat enough space for OSU to average 4.8 yards a pop in 2018 (more than Gundy said is necessary). And we haven’t even mentioned who they get to block for. RB1 is one of the most electric (and versatile) in the country. QB1, no matter who it is, will be able to escape more and be more elusive than Corndog (an underrated runner!) ever was. Add it all up, and I’m excited for a group that includes four redshirt freshmen in the two-deep and some potential pros starting.Only the games will give us the answers we want here, but with Oregon State on deck, there’s a ton of reason to be optimistic about a position group that hasn’t been at the forefront in years in Stillwater. A loaded class of 2019 is stepping into the mix with somebody Gundy has coveted for years at the helm. Maybe it still goes badly and Dru Brown and Spencer Sanders get sacked 34 more times, but heading into the 2019 season it seems as if this is one position group that’s moving forward in the right direction.
